Even with the nice head start Microsoft got launching their Xbox 360 earlier then their competitors, it appears that the Wii is not trailing far behind in sheer number of game titles. In a recent report by Research and Markets a number of rather interesting facts came up...
Here are a few key facts from Research and Markets' finding:
- Sega leads the industry with the most releases for current gen home consoles and eight releases based on new IP
- As highlighted in the previous Bulletin, Q1 08 sees Wii catching up with Xbox 360 in terms of the total number of games available for the platform
- Aggressive Wii support levels over Christmas have not persisted into 2008: release volume is more evenly spread between the platforms going forward
- American and British developers produced by far the most games this quarter, followed by Canadian and Japanese studios.
While generally statistics are usually boring, it's nice to see Sega pushing out many solid titles for all systems. On the other hand one could say the Wii is still partially suffering from "lastgenitus", having many "last gen" games ported to the new Nintendo console by 3rd party developers. Naturally as with all overlapping in consoles / generations, the revival of last gen games on a new platform is usually short lived, and usually only is common during the first few years of the new consoles lifespan.
