Nintendo fans rejoice! It appears that the Nintendo Wii is now the number one selling console in the US region.
The latest figures from market research group NPD show that 666,000 Wii consoles found homes in June. The total sales in the US since the November 2006 launch now stands at 10.9 Million units. This places the Wii ahead of Microsoft's XBox 360 which has been on sale for a year longer.
In terms of handheld gaming, Nintendo is continuing its dominance with 783,000 DS units sold in the US this June. The total DS sales in the US now stands at 20.8 Million.
The Wii also appears to be succeeding in bringing the families together. 83% of respondants to a study by research firm GfK NOP said that the Wii improved family cohesion. This is in contrast to 52 percent of of respondants stating that the PS3 brings the family together, while only 49% said the XBOX 360 improves family cohesion.
Nintendo of America's executive vice president of Sales & Marketing Cammie Dunaway said that, "Wii was created with the goal of expanding the gaming universe through its intuitive motion-sensing controller. Wii continues to pioneer new ways for people to interact with their video games and with one another."
