Overview

In The Legend of the Mystical Ninja players control Kid Ying and Dr. Yang (known as Goemon and Ebisumaru in Japanese version), which are on a quest to rescue princess Yuki. Players have to complete some tasks in order to move to the next stage. Both characters have different weapons and learn different attacks, but they are functionally identical.

The majority of stages are separated into two sections, first one focusing on town exploration where players gather information, buy items, learn special Judo attacks, play minigames, earn money, etc.

The second section of each stage is a platformer section where players can fight through minor enemies until they reach the end and defeat a boss.

In two-player mode, the characters can work mutually by having one ride the other piggy-back style. The character riding controls the attacks, while the character being ridden controls the movement and jumping which adds to the control difficulty, bringing more challenge to the game especially in combats. Piggy-backing has the advantage to make long or awkward jumps in certain stages, especially when a player is more skilled at it than the other.

After each stage is completed, a short animation shows a simple and light-hearted plot in which the next stage is revealed.
