Overview

Originally release in 1989 on NES, the game issued from the movie series begins with all four Ninja Turtles: Donatello, Leonardo, Michelangelo and Raphael, who can be rotated through at any time during gameplay. The turtles are very similar but they have their own weapons with their distinct attack damage, range and speed. In each of the five levels, the player uses an overview map to enter various sewers, warehouses and other areas which brings them to each level's goal.

The player will have to face and fight various enemies, for example: Foot Soldiers and Mousers to bomb dropping-blimps and chainsaw-wielding baddies. A unique gameplay feature in which all of the enemies (excluding mini-boss Bebop and all end-of-level bosses) have their own unique enemy groups that can change randomly during game sessions. Mini-boss fights occur regularly, it consists of the player having to defeat a common enemy in order to progress through the rest of the current stage. In most scenerios, a stronger enemy is involved in the mini-boss fight, however, occasionally a weak enemy may pop up from time to time. Apart the second stage, every stage terminates with a major boss battle.

Each turtle serves as a life, and there are only 2 continues. You also have the opportunity later in the game to rescue the captured ones that fell during combat. This game was considered to be extremely difficult at the time it was released.

Features

  • Donatello has the best reach of all four turtles, but his weapon is slow and he cannot hit small targets with a standing swing. Donatello's Bo staff does the most damage amongst all turtles and is strong against bosses as well.
  • Leonardo's ninja swords have long reach and the greatest weapon range when swinging, very poor on damage though.
  • Michelangelo is an average character all around. Michelangelo cannot attack downward like Donatello or Leonardo. His nunchaku weapon is weak, although once he has taken half damage his weapon becomes as strong as Donatello's.
  • Raphael's sais have the worst reach and flexibility of all the weapons in the game, consequently of all turtles. They are noticeably slow, but he does the most damage to some flying enemies. He can kill them quickly with one hit, while it takes the others a few hits to get the same result.
  • Stages and Bosses: Stage One: Sewers -- Boss: Bebop, and later in the level, Rocksteady, Stage Two: Dam -- Boss: None, Stage Three: City -- Boss: Slash, then Metalhead, Stage Four: Air Base -- Boss: Giant Mouser, Stage Five: Foot Clan Base -- Boss: Technodrome, Final Stage: The Technodrome -- Boss: Shredder
