Overview
Castlevania is typical to the 8-bit gaming platform era: the game features six levels, which the payer has to go through step by step in a linear progression. The player controls Simon Belmont, the great-grandson of Soleiyu Belmont, former Transylvania savior, whose primary mode of attack is via his whip, which can be upgraded by obtaining special items throughout the course of the game and which also extend its length. In addition, various "sub-weapons" can be obtained providing different means of attack. By breaking candelabra and certain other items located throughout the castle, Simon collects hearts, which can then be used to activate whatever sub-weapon he possesses in the time being. Simon only has the capability to carry one sub-weapon at a time.
Simon cannot change direction in mid-jump, nor jump on or off staircases, which limits greatly the player's control. Although Castlevania remains one of the most notorious games on NES for its difficulty level.
Each of the six levels in Castlevania conclude with a boss fight: which bosses are generally inspired or taken from horror literature and legend, for example Frankenstein's Monster, Medusa and the Grim Reaper.
