Review of Star Fox 64

Review By: RyanKajito

Finding out the history of Andross and the old Star Fox team before the game begins

Before you actually start playing the game, there's an approximately one minute long introduction where it tells you a story about the events leading up to the game. Andross was exiled to the planet Venom due to his dangerous experimentation. After noticing strange behavior coming from Venom, the Star Fox team was sent to investigate. Pigma betrayed the team, leading James McCloud to his death. Peppy barely escaped to tell James' son (Fox McCloud) about his father's fate. Now, as the new Star Fox team forms under Fox, it's up to you to save the Lylat system and stop Andross once and for all!

Now the actual game begins. Before you start a mission, there's a short cutscene where Fox communicates with the Cornerian Army General, Pepper. Then you take off and start the level. You fly in an aircraft called an Arwing, which is equipped with a G-Diffuser laser. There are items that can upgrade your laser scattered throughout all the levels (except Titania and Macbeth, where you control a Landmaster). You can also degrade your laser by crashing into objects or getting hit so much you break a wing. Once you break a wing, you get the lowest leveled laser and it's much harder to fly.

The other items that can be found in the game are wing repairs, smart bombs, silver rings, and gold rings. Smart bombs are helpful when trying to take on more than one enemy at once. Silver rings will increase your health. Gold rings have the same effect as silver, except once you collect three of them, your health is restored to maximum. Collect three more gold rings to get an extra life.

One of the remarkable features of this game is the alternate path system. In most levels, there is either a special objective you can clear or an alternative route you can take. For example, saving Falco in Corneria, destroying the mothership in Katina, defeating Star Wolf before time runs out in Fortuna. If you choose to clear said objective, you will go to a different level instead than if you had chosen not to clear it. However, you can still choose to take the default path on the map even if you took the alternate path in the levell.

Not only can you control an Arwing in the game, but you can also control the Landmaster (an army tank-like craft), the Blue-Marine (a submarine-like craft), and you can even play by foot in Multiplayer mode! Though the Landmaster is only used in Titania and Macbeth, it's a pretty cool thing to use. You can still fly, it's just very limited and it will only stay in the air for a few seconds. Your laser will always stay the same, however. In the Blue-Marine, you have infinite torpedoes which are equivalent to bombs (only a lot less powerful). Your laser is still upgradable, but you can't charge it.

The Landmaster in action

At the end of every level, you'll face a boss. These bosses all differ on how you're supposed to defeat them. Most of them just follow the simple process of weaken, attack, repeat. Or it'll be wait until they leave an opening, attack, repeat. On some of the levels, you may have to fight Star Fox's arch rival, Star Wolf. Whenever you fight them, Pigma targets Peppy, Leon targets Falco, Andrew targets Slippy, and Wolf targets Fox. However, you still have to shoot them down yourself. Defeating them is not a requirement, save for the battle on Venom.

One of the many bosses in the game

The music in the game is really great too. It fits the mood for many of the levels, and most of the time, it's just plain catchy. Star Wolf's theme is by far one of the best songs in the whole Star Fox series. Some of Nintendo's musical masterpieces come from this game.

Overall, Star Fox 64 is just plain fun and addictive. It has great replay value, for I have been playing this game literally for years. Nintendo did a great job on making a game with original gameplay and a deep storyline.
