Rare is located in Twycross, England and was born in 1982. They were originally owned to 49% by Nintendo, Rare is behind such smash hits as Blast Corps, the Donkey Kong Country series, GoldenEye, Jet Force Gemini, Killer Instinct, Perfect Dark and RC Pro-Am. Formerly known as Ultimate - Play The Game, Rare has one of the most impressive record of all gaming development companies.

The company was founded as Ultimate by the Stamper brothers, Chris and Tim. They were mainly focusing on developing for the Spectrum Sinclair in the beginning. They later concentrated on Nintendo's consoles and handhelds, which then became in 1985 a Rare's specialised subdivision. The Ultimate distribution rights were later sold off to publisher US Gold. In 1995, Nintendo bought a 25% stake in the company, which it later expanded. Although all its games were still distributed by Nintendo, Rare only started to self-publish select titles in 1997 with Diddy Kong Racing on the N64.

In 2002, Microsoft bought Rare when Nintendo elected not to renew its close ties with the developer.

The Stamper brother, two of three original founders, left the company to pursue other interests in 2007. The studio continues production on its titles as a cornerstone of the Microsoft Game Studios organization.
